Introduction
The most common pathogenic bacteria causing pyelonephritis are Gram-negative bacilli, Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, and other microorganisms. Gram-negative bacilli are commonly found as resident bacteria in the urinary system; normally retained locally in the urethra, they are readily flushed out by urine and thus unlikely to cause infection. However, when resistance is decreased, accompanied by reduced urine output and urine stasis in the local area, Gram-negative bacteria can easily proliferate.

The most common pathogenic bacteria causing pyelonephritis are Gram-negative bacilli, Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, and other microorganisms.

  1. Gram-negative bacilli

Gram-negative bacilli are common resident bacteria in the urinary system. Normally, they remain localized in the urethra and are promptly flushed out by urine, making infection unlikely. However, when immunity decreases, accompanied by reduced urine output and urine stasis in the local area, these bacteria can easily proliferate and lead to pyelonephritis. Medications such as levofloxacin capsules or amoxicillin capsules may be taken under medical guidance.

  2. Escherichia coli

Approximately 70%–80% of pyelonephritis cases are caused by Escherichia coli infection, often presenting with symptoms such as high fever at night and flank pain. Treatment may include cefuroxime tablets or cefotiam tablets, as directed by a physician.

  3. Staphylococcus aureus

Pyelonephritis caused by Staphylococcus aureus typically occurs in the context of systemic infection, where bacteria from an infection site elsewhere in the body spread to the kidneys via the bloodstream. Symptoms may include flank pain, fever, and nausea. Vancomycin tablets may be prescribed under medical supervision for treatment.

In addition, pyelonephritis may also be caused by Klebsiella pneumoniae or Proteus species. Maintaining healthy intestinal function is important in daily life. Women should maintain good personal hygiene, and both the gynecological and gastrointestinal systems should remain in normal condition to reduce the risk of pyelonephritis episodes.
