Causes of low sperm count
A low sperm count may be caused by environmental factors, varicocele, orchitis, or other reasons.
1. Environmental factors
If one is exposed to high-temperature environments for prolonged periods—such as frequent hot baths or occupations like welding—the elevated temperature may lead to a reduced sperm count.
2. Varicocele
Varicocele refers primarily to the abnormal enlargement of veins within the spermatic cord, appearing nodular or clustered, and is commonly seen in young and middle-aged men. This condition not only affects semen quality but can also reduce semen volume and even cause testicular atrophy, potentially leading to male infertility.
3. Orchitis
Orchitis is a disease mainly caused by infections from mycoplasma, chlamydia, viruses, or bacteria. Symptoms include testicular swelling and pain, decreased sperm count, erectile dysfunction, and high fever. Pain often worsens during sexual activity. If not treated promptly, it may lead to progressive testicular enlargement and formation of hard nodules.
Besides the above causes, thyroid disorders may also contribute. It is recommended to visit a reputable medical facility early, undergo relevant examinations to determine the exact cause, and then promptly follow professional medical advice for treatment, to avoid health complications due to delayed care. During treatment, adequate rest is essential; overexertion should be avoided, and sexual activity must be abstained from.
