Introduction
Treatment for mild swelling and pain near the ear depends on the underlying cause, common ones including trauma, skin allergies, external otitis, acute external otitis, and furuncles at the ear canal opening. If symptoms last a long time or progressively worsen, prompt medical evaluation and treatment at a hospital are necessary. During this period, it's important to get adequate rest and maintain a light diet, which can help improve symptoms.

Slight swelling and pain near the ear opening require treatment depending on the underlying cause, with common conditions including trauma, skin allergy, external otitis, acute external otitis, and furuncle at the ear canal opening.

1. Trauma

When the ear experiences external impact or collision, it may damage the surrounding soft tissues, leading to local bruising, swelling, and pain. It is recommended to apply ice packs within the first 24 hours after injury to reduce swelling and pain. If the pain is severe, anti-inflammatory and analgesic medications such as acetaminophen tablets, ibuprofen sustained-release capsules, or diclofenac sodium sustained-release tablets may be taken under medical guidance to relieve discomfort.

2. Skin Allergy

Contact between the ear opening and allergens such as animal dander or pollen can trigger an allergic skin reaction, resulting in local itching, redness, swelling, and pain. Antihistamine medications should be used under a doctor's supervision. Common options include loratadine tablets, ebastine tablets, and diphenhydramine hydrochloride tablets, which help suppress histamine release and alleviate symptoms.

3. External Otitis

Inflammation of the external ear canal may stimulate pain receptors within the canal, causing ear pain along with discharge and swelling. It is recommended to take antibiotics such as cefixime tablets, cefuroxime axetil tablets, or roxithromycin tablets under medical supervision to control inflammation and relieve symptoms.

4. Acute External Otitis

Acute bacterial infection of the external ear canal leads to acute congestion and edema of the skin and mucous membrane at the ear canal opening, resulting in swelling and pain. Local treatment with antibiotic ear drops—such as levofloxacin hydrochloride ear drops, lomefloxacin hydrochloride ear drops, or chloramphenicol ear drops—is recommended under medical guidance to combat infection and improve symptoms.

5. Furuncle at the Ear Canal Opening

Bacterial infection causing a furuncle (boil) at the ear canal opening results in pus accumulation. The buildup of pus increases local tissue pressure, leading to redness, swelling around the ear, and pus drainage. Under a doctor’s advice, oral antibiotics such as cefaclor capsules, amoxicillin capsules, or roxithromycin dispersible tablets are recommended to promote resolution of the infection and relieve symptoms.

If swelling and pain near the ear persist for a prolonged period or worsen progressively, prompt medical evaluation and treatment are necessary. During this time, adequate rest and a light diet are recommended to support symptom improvement.
