Can asthma be inherited across generations?
Asthma often shows a clear familial clustering pattern, and thus may exhibit inheritance across generations. The detailed analysis is as follows:
Asthma is a heterogeneous disease characterized by chronic airway inflammation and airway hyperresponsiveness. Symptoms typically include recurrent episodes of wheezing, shortness of breath, chest tightness, and coughing. This phenomenon is usually associated with genetic factors, making asthma a polygenic inherited disorder. Generally, the closer the genetic relationship to an affected individual, the higher the risk of developing asthma. Therefore, asthma may be passed down across generations; however, the disease only develops when both genetic predisposition and environmental factors are present.
After the onset of asthma, patients are advised to undergo long-term, standardized treatment to prevent interference with daily activities and to avoid life-threatening severe attacks.
