Introduction
Methods for respiratory exercises in COPD include pursed-lip breathing, diaphragmatic breathing, and lower rib breathing, among others. Individuals can choose the most suitable exercise method according to their personal condition. Diaphragmatic breathing is a commonly used respiratory exercise. In addition, breathing can also be improved through gentle physical activities or with the assistance of respiratory training devices.

Respiratory exercises for COPD include pursed-lip breathing, diaphragmatic breathing, and lower rib breathing. Individuals can choose the most suitable method based on their personal condition.

1. Pursed-lip breathing

Patients with COPD can use pursed-lip breathing to counteract intrinsic airway resistance and prevent small airway collapse during exhalation. This helps alleviate type II respiratory failure and improves pulmonary ventilation.

2. Diaphragmatic breathing

Diaphragmatic breathing is a common respiratory exercise. During training, patients should inhale through the nose while allowing the abdomen to expand outward, then exhale slowly through the mouth while drawing the abdomen inward. This strengthens the diaphragm and enhances lung function.

3. Lower rib breathing

Regular respiratory exercises help COPD patients relieve progressively declining respiratory function and boost immune function. For lower rib breathing, place your hands under the lower ribs and gently press down. Pucker your lips and breathe slowly while contracting the ribs inward.

In addition, gentle physical exercises or using respiratory training devices may also assist in improving breathing function.
