What causes a headache upon waking up in the morning?
Headaches upon waking in the morning may result from either physiological or pathological factors, such as acute upper respiratory tract infection, hypertension, etc. The specific causes are analyzed as follows:
I. Physiological Factors
Headaches may occur due to intense emotions before bedtime, prolonged熬夜 (staying up late), or high levels of mental stress, which prevent the brain from fully resting and lead to physiological headaches caused by cerebral ischemia and hypoxia.
II. Pathological Factors
1. Acute Upper Respiratory Tract Infection
This may occur due to poor immunity, low indoor temperature during sleep, wearing thin clothing, or exposure to unclean environments, allowing pathogens such as bacteria or viruses to invade the body and trigger an acute upper respiratory tract infection. Symptoms may also include fever, nasal congestion, etc.
2. Hypertension
If a person already has hypertension and fails to take antihypertensive medication as prescribed before bedtime, elevated blood pressure may impair cerebral circulation and cause headaches. Additional symptoms may include dizziness and nausea.
Besides the common causes mentioned above, headaches could also be caused by conditions such as cervical spondylosis or brain tumors.
