Introduction
Intellectual disability refers to mental retardation, and whether depression develops depends on the severity of the mental retardation. Individuals with mild mental retardation may easily develop psychological disorders in daily life and communication, leading to depression. However, those with severe mental retardation often have impaired social interaction and poor living skills, making them less sensitive to external stress; thus, they are unlikely to develop psychological disorders or depression.

Mental retardation generally refers to intellectual disability. Whether depression may occur depends on the severity of the intellectual disability. The specific analysis is as follows:

1. May develop depression

Intellectual disability is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized primarily by reduced social and daily living skills, and delayed or impaired intellectual development. In cases of mild intellectual disability, individuals may easily develop psychological disturbances during daily activities and communication, which over time can lead to depression.

2. Unlikely to develop depression

If the intellectual disability is severe, resulting in an inability to interact normally with others and significantly impaired daily functioning, individuals typically do not perceive external stressors and are less likely to develop psychological issues; therefore, depression is unlikely to occur.

Individuals diagnosed with intellectual disability should seek timely medical evaluation and receive standardized treatment under the guidance of a physician to prevent worsening of the condition.
