How to rinse your nose for allergic rhinitis
Generally, nasal irrigation for allergic rhinitis can be performed by following these steps: preparing a saline solution, getting the nasal irrigation tools ready, setting up a suitable environment, tilting the head, instilling the saline solution, maintaining breathing, rinsing the nasal cavity, repeating the process, blowing the nose, and keeping everything clean. The specific procedures are as follows:
1. Prepare the saline solution
You may use physiological saline or make your own saline solution. To prepare a homemade saline solution: add an appropriate amount of additive-free table salt to 500 mL of warm boiled water, and stir until fully dissolved.
2. Prepare the nasal irrigation device
You can use a nasal irrigator, nasal spray bottle, or a neti pot. Choose a device that suits you best and ensure it is kept clean.
3. Set up the environment for nasal irrigation
Find a quiet and clean place to perform the irrigation. You may stand in front of a sink or carry out the procedure in the bathroom.
4. Tilt your head
Slightly tilt your head forward so that your nostrils are aligned with the nozzle of the irrigation device.
5. Instill the saline solution
Pour the saline solution into the irrigation device and operate according to the device's instructions. Typically, insert the nozzle into one nostril and gently press the device to allow the saline solution to slowly flow into the nasal cavity.
6. Maintain breathing
While the saline solution is flowing, breathe through your mouth and avoid holding your breath forcefully.
7. Rinse the nasal cavity
As the saline flows through the nasal cavity, you should feel it draining out from the other nostril, effectively flushing out dirt, allergens, and mucus.
8. Repeat the steps
Instill the saline solution into the other nostril and repeat the above steps to clean the opposite side of the nasal cavity.
9. Blow your nose
After rinsing, gently blow your nose using tissue paper or a handkerchief to expel excess saline solution and debris from the nasal passages.
10. Keep everything clean
After irrigation, rinse the device thoroughly with clean water and let it air dry for future use.
Note: If you experience discomfort or pain during the irrigation process, stop immediately and consult a doctor for advice.
