Introduction
1. Qi stagnation and blood stasis: As the nipple is associated with the Liver channel in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), pruritus of the nipple is primarily attributed to Liver dysfunction, most commonly caused by qi stagnation and blood stasis, or deficiency of qi and blood. 2. Nipple eczema: Prolonged sweating or tight-fitting bras may induce nipple eczema, which typically affects the nipple and surrounding areolar skin. 3. External irritation: Itching of the nipple is frequently caused by irritation from bra materials, especially in women.

The nipple is an extremely sensitive area in women—and one highly prone to abnormalities. In daily life, many women experience breast-related issues, with nipple pruritus (itching) being a relatively common symptom. Because scratching the area is inadvisable, targeted treatment is essential to effectively alleviate this itching. So, what causes nipple itching in women? Below, we address this question.

What Causes Nipple Itching in Women?

1. Qi Stagnation and Blood Stasis

Since the nipple corresponds to the Liver meridian in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), nipple itching is primarily associated with Liver dysfunction—most commonly due to qi stagnation and blood stasis or deficiency of qi and blood. Affected women often experience severe nipple itching or pain before, during, or immediately after menstruation, with symptoms gradually subsiding once menses ends. Additionally, inverted or flattened nipples may trap dirt and debris; prolonged accumulation can irritate the mammary epithelium and provoke itching.

2. Nipple Eczema

Prolonged sweating or tight-fitting bras may trigger nipple eczema, typically affecting the nipple and surrounding areolar skin. During acute episodes, patients may develop skin erosion, intense pruritus, pain, and scaling. Individuals with personal or familial histories of allergies are at higher risk. To prevent flare-ups, maintain natural skin moisture, minimize soap use, and avoid prolonged hot baths. Topical treatments—including corticosteroid ointments (e.g., Pianping ointment) and calamine lotion—can help relieve nipple itching.

3. External Irritation

Nipple itching frequently results from irritation caused by bra materials. Women are advised to select soft, cotton-based undergarments to reduce exposure to chemical irritants that may trigger allergic reactions. Bras should also fit comfortably—not overly tight—as excessive constriction can impair local blood circulation and contribute to itching. Notably, in approximately 95–98% of cases, nipple itching in women is attributable to mammary gland hyperplasia (fibrocystic changes). Therefore, adequate rest, avoidance of high-hormone foods, and emotional well-being are all important preventive measures.

The above outlines the primary causes of nipple itching in women. We hope this information proves helpful.
