Introduction
The primary symptom of macular disease is decreased vision; occasionally, patients may experience metamorphopsia (distorted vision) or abnormal color perception—symptoms closely related to macular function. As the macula is the region of the retina responsible for the sharpest vision and contains the majority of photoreceptor cells, any damage to this area typically results in a significant decline in visual acuity and often causes metamorphopsia.

The most common symptom of macular disease is decreased vision; occasionally, patients may experience metamorphopsia (distorted vision) or abnormal color perception—symptoms primarily related to dysfunction of the macula. As the macula is the region of the retina responsible for the sharpest central vision and contains the highest density of photoreceptor cells, any damage to this area typically results in a rapid and significant decline in visual acuity, often accompanied by metamorphopsia.

Treatment strategies vary depending on the specific type of macular disease. For age-related macular degeneration (AMD), intravitreal injection of anti-VEGF agents is currently the standard therapy. In cases of macular edema, intravitreal injections of triamcinolone acetonide or anti-VEGF drugs may be administered to reduce edema and thereby restore visual function.

For conditions such as epiretinal membrane or macular hole, close observation is recommended during the early stages. However, if disease progression impairs visual function, surgical intervention should be considered promptly.
