Can mixed hemorrhoids affect pregnancy?

Introduction
Theoretically, mixed hemorrhoids themselves do not affect pregnancy; rather, pregnancy may exacerbate the progression of mixed hemorrhoids. Hemorrhoids are soft venous masses formed by dilation and tortuosity of the venous plexus beneath the mucosa of the distal rectum and beneath the skin of the anal canal. During pregnancy in women with hemorrhoids, increased pelvic blood flow—required to support fetal development—combined with uterine compression of pelvic veins, can worsen hemorrhoidal symptoms.

Mixed hemorrhoids refer to a type of hemorrhoidal disease characterized by the simultaneous occurrence of internal and external hemorrhoids at the same anatomical location—above and below the dentate line in the anal canal—forming a venous mass due to varicosity, with no clear demarcation between the internal and external components.

Do mixed hemorrhoids affect pregnancy?

Theoretically, mixed hemorrhoids themselves do not directly impair fertility or hinder conception. In fact, pregnancy tends to exacerbate existing mixed hemorrhoids. Hemorrhoids are soft venous masses resulting from dilation and tortuosity of the venous plexus beneath the mucosa of the distal rectum and the skin of the anal canal. During pregnancy, increased pelvic blood flow to support fetal development, combined with uterine enlargement compressing pelvic veins, impedes venous return—thereby worsening venous congestion and varicosity.

However, certain symptoms associated with mixed hemorrhoids may indirectly adversely affect pregnancy. For instance, chronic prolapse of internal hemorrhoids—especially severe prolapse that cannot be promptly reduced—may cause significant pain and discomfort, potentially impacting maternal well-being during pregnancy. Another concern is persistent or severe bleeding from internal hemorrhoids. If left untreated—or inadequately treated—chronic blood loss may lead to iron-deficiency anemia, which can indirectly compromise pregnancy outcomes.

The above outlines whether mixed hemorrhoids affect pregnancy. We hope this information is helpful to you.
