How is Nodular Acne Treated?
The primary treatment approaches for nodular acne include the following: For isolated nodular lesions that have already formed scars, intralesional corticosteroid injection is the most effective option—delivering medication directly into the nodule to promote softening and absorption. For multiple nodular lesions, physical therapies may be employed. For instance, red and blue light phototherapy can disinfect the skin surface. If available, photodynamic therapy (PDT) offers rapid eradication of bacteria deep within hair follicles while also regulating sebum production and metabolism. Since nodular acne involves significant inflammation, oral tetracycline-class antibiotics—such as doxycycline—are commonly prescribed. Oral retinoids—like isotretinoin soft capsules—are particularly effective for nodular and cystic acne.
Nodular acne represents a relatively severe form of acne clinically characterized by firm, variably sized subcutaneous nodules. Its management is more challenging than that of common acne; improper treatment or repeated irritation may lead to scarring.
