Introduction
If HIV leaves the human body, it can be rapidly inactivated. For example, under dry conditions, the HIV virus readily undergoes denaturation and inactivation. It is also easily inactivated at elevated temperatures; for instance, it is inactivated within approximately 30 minutes at 56°C. Additionally, HIV is highly sensitive to various disinfectants and chemical agents present in the environment.

In today’s society, some individuals may be infected with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). This condition can lead to feelings of inferiority and significantly impair quality of life. How long can HIV remain viable?

How long can HIV remain viable?

HIV exhibits relatively weak resistance to external environmental conditions and primarily remains viable for extended periods within living cells, blood, and bodily fluids. At room temperature, HIV can survive in blood or secretions for several hours to several days; however, under natural environmental conditions, it cannot persist indefinitely—thus, no precise survival duration can be defined.

Once HIV leaves the human body, it is rapidly inactivated. For instance, under dry conditions, the virus readily undergoes denaturation and inactivation. Similarly, elevated temperatures readily inactivate HIV—for example, exposure to 56°C for approximately 30 minutes results in complete inactivation. Moreover, HIV is highly sensitive to various disinfectants and chemical agents commonly used in the environment. Standard disinfectants such as bleach, formaldehyde, and alcohol effectively inactivate HIV. However, the virus can remain viable for prolonged periods in liquid or moist environments outside the body. For example, in dried blood that has not clotted, HIV may persist for several hours to several days. Research indicates that, under optimal laboratory conditions, HIV can remain viable for up to approximately 15 days.

To prevent transmission, avoid direct contact with an HIV-positive individual’s blood, semen, or breast milk; consistently practice self-respect and abstain from prostitution or commercial sex; and avoid high-risk sexual behaviors. We hope this information proves helpful to you.
