Is Painless Childbirth Really Beneficial?
In real life, most female patients opt for painless labor during childbirth. However, many are unaware of whether painless labor is beneficial—or potentially harmful—to their bodies. So, is painless labor truly beneficial?
Is Painless Labor Truly Beneficial?
Painless labor is a safer and more comfortable method of childbirth. It primarily involves epidural anesthesia administered during labor, combined with a patient-controlled analgesia (PCA) pump to effectively alleviate the mother’s pain. This approach significantly reduces the intense discomfort associated with childbirth. During labor, women commonly experience severe pain, which may lead to increased physical distress, prolonged labor duration, and even dystocia (difficult labor). Painless labor helps substantially mitigate these risks.

Because individual physiological responses vary, potential side effects or complications of painless labor also differ from person to person. Only a small number of women experience transient postpartum symptoms—such as lower back pain, headache, or numbness in the lower limbs—but the incidence is very low, and most symptoms resolve spontaneously within a short period. The vast majority of women experience no long-term sequelae following painless labor.

For one month postpartum, sexual intercourse, bathing, and sitz baths should be avoided. Maintain cleanliness and hygiene of the perineal area. During the postpartum confinement period (“sitting the month”), ensure adequate rest and minimize getting out of bed. Breastfeeding exclusively with maternal milk is strongly encouraged, as it supports the baby’s healthy development and helps prevent conditions such as gastroenteritis and neonatal jaundice. Consume nourishing soups such as pork rib soup and crucian carp soup, which support lactation. A balanced diet rich in high-quality protein, fresh vegetables and fruits, and appropriate vitamin supplementation will adequately meet both mother’s and baby’s nutritional needs. Wishing you excellent health and a joyful life!
