Introduction
Recurrent aphthous ulcers (RAUs) are self-limiting; thus, no treatment is required for spontaneous resolution. In most patients with RAUs, lesions typically heal within 7–10 days. However, some patients experience severe pain, necessitating pharmacologic intervention to accelerate ulcer healing and alleviate pain. Mouth rinses are commonly used for this purpose. Even plain water rinses can promote healing of oral ulcers.

Aphthous ulcers (canker sores) are oral mucosal disorders. This condition arises from multiple causes. In some patients, aphthous ulcers resolve spontaneously within a few days. So, how long does it typically take for an aphthous ulcer to heal?

How long does it take for an aphthous ulcer to heal?

Recurrent aphthous stomatitis is a self-limiting condition—meaning it resolves spontaneously without treatment. Most patients experience complete healing within approximately 7–10 days. However, in cases of severe pain, medications may be required to accelerate ulcer healing and alleviate discomfort. Mouth rinses are commonly used for this purpose—for example, Baitai mouthwash or Pingye mouthwash can promote ulcer healing. Additionally, applying triamcinolone acetonide ointment topically to the ulcer surface may also facilitate healing.

Foods beneficial for patients with aphthous ulcers include: • Kiwifruit: Rich in vitamin C, it effectively promotes oral epithelial cell regeneration and ulcer healing. • Tomatoes: Help alleviate symptoms of aphthous ulcers. If you dislike eating tomatoes raw, try holding a tomato slice in your mouth for about three minutes. Initial discomfort may occur, but persistent use helps relieve symptoms. • Snow pears: Possess heat-clearing and detoxifying properties; rich in various B vitamins that support wound healing and help replenish bodily fluids. • Persimmon frost: A traditional remedy derived from dried persimmons (persimmon cakes). Dissolve persimmon frost in hot water and consume; improvement is often seen within two to three days. • Honey: Applied topically to the ulcer, honey promotes cellular regeneration, relieves pain, and exerts anti-inflammatory effects due to its rich nutritional profile.
