Introduction
Liver cancer significantly impacts health. In its early stages, liver cancer often presents no obvious symptoms; however, some patients may experience abdominal distension, loss of appetite, nausea and vomiting, mild pain in the right upper abdomen, or jaundice. Early cases are sometimes misdiagnosed as hepatitis—or mistakenly treated as such—potentially delaying appropriate diagnosis and management. Notably, some patients with liver cancer remain entirely asymptomatic not only in the early stage but even when the tumor has grown to over ten centimeters in size.

In today’s society, many people enjoy smoking, drinking alcohol, and staying up late—habits that can lead to liver disease and even hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). So, what are the early symptoms of liver cancer?

What Are the Early Symptoms of Liver Cancer?

Liver cancer significantly impacts health. In its early stages, it often produces no obvious symptoms. Some patients, however, may experience abdominal distension, loss of appetite, nausea and vomiting, mild pain in the right upper abdomen, or jaundice. These early signs are frequently misdiagnosed as viral hepatitis, leading to inappropriate treatment and potential delays in diagnosis and management. Notably, some patients with liver cancer remain entirely asymptomatic—even when tumors grow to over ten centimeters in size.

Early-stage liver cancer encompasses several subtypes. When the tumor has not yet invaded blood vessels, systemic metastasis is unlikely, and most patients remain candidates for surgical resection. However, many patients develop liver cancer secondary to cirrhosis or chronic hepatitis, and their impaired liver function renders them unsuitable for surgery. In such cases, minimally invasive therapies offer a viable alternative.

Minimally invasive treatments play a significant role in managing liver cancer. For instance, high-frequency microwave ablation involves percutaneous needle insertion into the tumor, followed by localized thermal ablation to destroy the cancerous tissue. This technique has been widely used for years and is considered a first-line therapeutic option. Therefore, regular screening is critically important. Initial diagnostic evaluations may include liver ultrasound, liver function tests, and serum alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) measurement. We hope this information proves helpful to you!
