Introduction
Oral ulcers can cause oral pain, which may be alleviated by topical application of medications such as Houjian Spray or Xiguashuang (Watermelon Frost) directly onto the ulcerated area. These agents effectively reduce pain, promote ulcer healing, and shorten the duration of the ulcer. Additionally, local anesthetics may be used for pain relief—typically applied before meals. Commonly used anesthetics include tetracaine, cocaine, and lidocaine.

When oral ulcers occur, some patients experience pain or difficulty eating. How, then, can oral ulcer pain be alleviated?

How to Alleviate Oral Ulcer Pain

To relieve pain associated with oral ulcers, topical application of medications such as Houjian Throat Spray or Xigua Shuang (Watermelon Frost) directly onto the ulcerated area may be considered. These agents effectively reduce pain, promote ulcer healing, and shorten the duration of the ulcer. Additionally, local anesthetics may be used for pain relief—typically applied shortly before meals. Commonly used anesthetics include tetracaine, cocaine, and lidocaine. Recurrent aphthous stomatitis is one of the most common, recurrent, and self-limiting oral mucosal ulcerative disorders. Its classic clinical features include localized redness, a yellowish pseudomembrane, central depression, and significant pain—the severe pain being a hallmark symptom of oral ulcers.

Following the development of an oral ulcer, the presence of an open wound in the mouth necessitates avoidance of irritating foods. Such foods—including chili peppers, ginger, scallions, garlic, and vinegar—can exacerbate pain and should therefore be avoided. Conversely, protein-rich foods such as fish and shrimp are permissible and may support ulcer healing. Overly salty or strongly flavored foods may also irritate the ulcer and should be limited. Instead, patients may consume bland, easily digestible foods such as congee (rice porridge) and milk.

Moreover, during episodes of oral ulcers, increased intake of vegetables and fruits—particularly those rich in vitamins—is recommended, as they aid in ulcer healing. We hope this information proves helpful!
