Is alendronate sodium tablet effective for treating osteoporosis?
Disease description:
Alendronate sodium tablets are primarily used to treat osteoporosis in postmenopausal women, thereby helping prevent vertebral compression fractures. These tablets should be taken orally, and calcium and vitamin D supplementation is generally recommended concurrently. The medication must be taken on an empty stomach—typically first thing in the morning, at least 30 minutes before breakfast. During administration, patients must drink a full glass (at least 6–8 oz) of plain water to ensure the tablet reaches the stomach promptly; failure to do so may cause esophageal irritation or injury. Alendronate sodium is contraindicated in patients with esophageal abnormalities such as stricture.
