Can an intrauterine device (IUD) be inserted after uterine polypectomy to prevent recurrence?
Disease description:
Previously, I was diagnosed with uterine polyps, which have since been removed via surgical curettage. Now, I would like to have an intrauterine device (IUD) inserted for contraception. May I ask whether inserting an IUD after polyp removal can help prevent recurrence of uterine polyps?
IUD insertion can help prevent infertility. However, preventing uterine polyp recurrence is generally not feasible. Uterine polyps are common and tend to recur due to chronic inflammation. While IUDs provide contraception, this effect is primarily attributable to the sterile inflammatory response they induce within the uterine cavity, which may lead to endometrial polyp formation. Patients are advised to undergo timely medical examinations. Adequate rest is essential—avoid overexertion—and refrain from consuming spicy or irritating foods. Additionally, take precautions against bacterial and viral infections, and schedule follow-up examinations promptly.
