Symptoms of a ligament sprain include local swelling, pain, tenderness, subcutaneous bruising, and purple skin. A noticeable swelling occurs after the ligament is injured, which may affect joint movement. The affected area must be properly immobilized to prevent further activity of the injured limb, avoiding more serious injury. Short-term immobilization with a cast or brace is recommended.
