Is there a connection between favism and iron deficiency anemia?
Disease description:
My brother has anemia, and online sources suggest it might be favism. Is there a connection between favism and iron deficiency anemia?
Favism is a common type of hemolytic anemia. Because patients lack certain red blood cell enzymes, consuming fava beans triggers acute hemolytic anemia. Symptoms include high fever, chills, abdominal pain, hematuria, and hemoglobinuria. Favism leads to anemia, mainly manifested as dizziness, fatigue, tinnitus, and other related symptoms. The destruction of red blood cells exceeds the bone marrow's compensatory capacity to produce new ones. In severe cases of anemia, blood transfusion may be considered; however, prevention is key in daily management.
