Disease description:

My uncle just underwent surgery for a calcaneal fracture last week. He's been complaining of leg pain these past few days, and after seeing a doctor, he was diagnosed with osteoporosis. How should osteoporosis be treated following calcaneal fracture surgery?

Dr. Lin Yunfei
After a fracture, the patient needs to remain in bed until the fractured ends become stable, after which they can begin walking and moving around. If strength exercises are avoided for a prolonged period, it may lead to calcaneal osteoporosis. In daily life, patients can perform joint flexion and extension exercises of the limbs and engage in leg muscle strengthening training. Additionally, they should appropriately supplement calcium and vitamin D, and consume more calcium-rich foods such as shrimp skins, soy products, milk, and lean meat.
