After an abortion, infection leading to endometritis may cause discomfort such as soreness in the lower back and sacrum, and a sensation of heaviness or pain in the lower abdomen; however, the pain is usually not severe. Additionally, vaginal discharge may become abnormal—appearing pale yellow or blood-tinged, with a thin consistency, and sometimes accompanied by a purulent, foul odor. Some patients may also experience menorrhagia (excessive menstrual bleeding) or dysmenorrhea (painful menstruation).
