What does acute external otitis look like?
Disease description:
Is mild redness and swelling in a child's ear accompanied by low-grade fever a sign of acute external otitis? What does acute external otitis look like?
Acute external otitis is mainly characterized by redness and swelling, along with low-grade fever. Pain may radiate to the ipsilateral temporal region and is often accompanied by fever and malaise. The external auditory canal shows diffuse congestion, erosion, crusting, or丘-like elevations. When advanced, pus accumulates at the roof of the external auditory canal; after ulceration and suppuration, ear pain tends to decrease. Other symptoms include tenderness of the tragus, stabbing pain in the ear canal, increased pain upon pulling the ear, and swelling of the skin in the mastoid area.
