How is ovarian teratoma treated?
Disease description:
I've had menstrual irregularities for a long time, and recently experienced severe abdominal pain. After going to the hospital, I was diagnosed with an ovarian teratoma. How is ovarian teratoma treated?
Ovarian teratomas are generally treated surgically. If an ovarian teratoma is small and asymptomatic, careful observation without immediate treatment may be appropriate. However, larger ovarian teratomas carry risks of complications such as torsion, rupture, or malignant transformation, and should therefore be surgically removed promptly. Some ovarian teratomas also possess endocrine activity; even when small in size, they may cause specific symptoms and require surgical intervention.
