How should ovarian teratoma be treated?
Disease description:
I have always had irregular menstruation, sometimes getting my period only once every two months. I also have excessive vaginal discharge with a strong odor. After examination, I was diagnosed with an ovarian teratoma. How should an ovarian teratoma be treated?
Surgical treatment should be the first-line approach for ovarian teratomas. The surgery can be performed either as open surgery or laparoscopic surgery. During the operation, the tumor is initially diagnosed as benign teratoma or suspicious malignant teratoma. For young patients with malignant teratomas who wish to preserve fertility, fertility-sparing surgery may be considered, followed by postoperative chemotherapy. The recurrence rate of teratomas is approximately 2%, so regular postoperative follow-up examinations are necessary.
