My child was just born and the test showed high total bile acids. I would like to ask, what does it mean when a newborn has high total bile acids?

Dr. Zhou Xiaofeng
Elevated total bile acids in newborns may indicate possible conditions such as hemolytic jaundice, viral hepatitis, or congenital biliary atresia. Hemolytic jaundice in newborns is often caused by blood type incompatibility between the mother and the fetus. Viral hepatitis, primarily hepatitis B, is mainly transmitted from the mother. Congenital biliary atresia can also lead to elevated total bile acid levels.
