Elevated bile acid levels may be temporary, which is generally considered a normal phenomenon.

If elevated bile acid levels are persistent, it may indicate that the liver has been damaged by viruses or medications, leading to hepatocyte injury and increased bile acids. Additionally, obstructive jaundice can also cause elevated bile acid levels. Conditions such as common bile duct stones or bile duct tumors may impair bile secretion, resulting in bile reflux into the bloodstream.
