How to test bile acids

The bile acid test can be performed through a blood draw. The patient's blood is centrifuged to separate the serum, in which the bile acid levels are measured. Fasting is required before undergoing the bile acid test. If the test results show elevated bile acid levels, further examinations such as liver ultrasound and liver function tests should be conducted to determine the underlying disease causing the elevated bile acids.
