Causes of Cervicitis

Cervicitis may result from recent high-risk sexual behaviors such as frequent intercourse or having multiple sexual partners, which can allow various bacteria to invade and cause ascending infection. If personal hygiene is neglected—such as using substandard external genital cleansers or unclean toilet paper—the cervical mucosa may become irritated, leading to inflammation or acute injury and subsequently cervicitis. Repeated induced abortions or vaginal deliveries also typically increase the likelihood of developing cervicitis.
