The condition is primarily due to dysfunction of the reproductive endocrine axis, which is more commonly seen during adolescence and the perimenopausal period. Patients lose normal menstrual cycles and the self-limiting nature of bleeding. The length of bleeding intervals varies, and some patients may even experience amenorrhea.
