Disease description:

I've had persistent itching in the vulva for the past few days. My sister says it might be vulvitis, while my mom thinks it could be leukoplakia of the vulva. I'd like to know what the differences between these two conditions are?

The causes of vulvitis and leukoplakia of the vulva are different. Vulvitis is usually caused by poor personal hygiene. Leukoplakia of the vulva typically belongs to a group of conditions characterized by pigment loss in the vulvar skin. The symptoms of these two conditions also differ. Patients with vulvitis commonly experience symptoms such as vulvar itching, pain, and a burning sensation, which generally worsen during urination or sexual intercourse. Leukoplakia of the vulva usually presents with severe vulvar itching, and the vulvar skin may show signs of hyperplasia, atrophy, and whitening.
