After developing red eye (conjunctivitis), prompt, thorough, and consistent treatment is essential. Continue treatment for one week after symptoms have completely disappeared to prevent recurrence. When there is significant discharge from the affected eye, it is advisable to irrigate the conjunctival sac with an appropriate cleansing agent such as normal saline or 2% boric acid solution, 2–3 times daily. Use sterile cotton swabs to gently clean the eyelid margins, and apply eye drops or ointment to the affected eye as needed.
