How is water intoxication caused?
Disease description:
I was afraid of getting sick, so I've been drinking a lot of water recently. The doctor told me I have water intoxication. What causes water intoxication?
Water intoxication is caused by factors such as kidney dysfunction and excessive water intake. The kidneys are responsible for producing urine and eliminating toxins; patients with impaired kidney function have reduced excretory capacity. If fluid intake is not controlled, excess water accumulates in the body, leading to water intoxication. When a person drinks large amounts of water frequently or suddenly receives a large volume of salt-free fluids exceeding the kidneys' excretory capacity, water intoxication may occur.
