Will social phobia have a reaction?
Disease description:
A friend of mine is slow to warm up and dislikes unfamiliar environments. I suspect he might have social anxiety disorder—would social anxiety disorder cause such reactions?
Social phobia involves reactive symptoms. Social phobia refers to a persistent fear, anxiety, embarrassment, and fear of losing face that patients experience in social situations or during interpersonal interactions, such as eating in public or speaking in front of others. To alleviate this anxiety and fear, patients often avoid such social situations. When avoidance is not possible, they experience prolonged anxiety leading up to the feared event. In severe cases, this may lead to low mood and cause problems in social functioning, academic performance, work, and other areas.
