Disease description:

I felt unwell last year, with symptoms resembling cervicitis. A friend suggested I get checked. I would like to have a transvaginal ultrasound to see if I have cervicitis. Can cervicitis be detected by transvaginal ultrasound?

Transvaginal ultrasound cannot detect cervicitis. Vaginal ultrasound can only reveal structural and morphological abnormalities of organs, but cannot assess their functional status. Cervicitis is an inflammatory condition; to determine its presence, a gynecological examination should be performed, and cervical secretions should be collected for testing to check for pathogenic microbial infections or cervical pathological tissues. Under the microscope, the cervical mucosa, submucosal tissue, and areas surrounding the glands should be examined for inflammatory cell infiltration. If inflammatory cells are found, this is considered indicative of cervicitis. Based on vaginal ultrasound findings alone, it is impossible to determine whether a patient has cervicitis. Vaginal ultrasound cannot detect whether a patient has vaginitis or cervicitis.
