What is a ligament injury?
Disease description:
The neighbor's child participated in a sports event and was said to have a ligament injury. But what exactly is a ligamant injury?
Ligament injury refers to damage of tendons and ligaments caused by excessive loading. Tendons and ligaments are connective tissues attached to skeletal muscles; their function is to transmit muscular force into bone movement and stabilize joint positions, thereby protecting joint structures. Excessive loading can damage these structures, leading to pain and deformity, and ultimately contributing to degenerative and structural damage. The severity of injury may range from mild sprains to complete rupture. Severe injuries can cause pain, reduced or lost range of motion, and decreased joint stability.
