Is it okay to get an IUD a few years after giving birth?
Disease description:
I recently gave birth and would like to wait a few years before getting an IUD. I'm wondering, is it okay to get an IUD several years after giving birth?
It is acceptable to insert an IUD several years after giving birth. Generally, it is recommended that mothers wait at least two years after childbirth before considering IUD insertion. After delivery, breastfeeding can cause changes in a mother's weight and body shape, which may affect the sizing and effectiveness of the IUD. During breastfeeding, a woman's physical condition may also change, potentially causing discomfort with IUD use or even reducing its longevity. Additionally, following pregnancy and childbirth, a mother's immune system may be weakened, making her more susceptible to bacterial infections. Inserting an IUD during this time could increase the risk of infection.
