Can gallstones cause elevated transaminase levels?
In general, gallstones may lead to elevated transaminase levels. Gallstones are small stones formed from a mixture of bile crystals, cholesterol, fat, and bacteria. They can block the bile ducts, causing bile stasis, which in turn damages liver cells and ultimately results in increased transaminase levels. Additionally, gallstones may cause hepatitis, as bile stasis induced by gallstones can damage liver cells and trigger inflammation of the liver. When hepatitis progresses to a certain extent, transaminase levels may also rise. If symptoms of elevated transaminases due to gallstones occur, it is recommended to seek medical attention promptly to prevent worsening of the condition.
