The Role and Functions of Vitamin D2
As I get older, I have osteoporosis. My doctor said I can take vitamin D2 supplements. I would like to ask, what are the roles and functions of vitamin D2?
Vitamin D2 is a vitamin-type medication. Vitamin D2 enhances the function of the small intestinal mucosa in calcium absorption, increases serum calcium and phosphorus concentrations, and works synergistically with parathyroid hormone and calcitonin to promote the release of calcium phosphate from old bone, thereby maintaining calcium and phosphorus balance in the body. Additionally, vitamin D2 facilitates calcium deposition at sites of new bone formation, promotes citrate deposition in bone, enhances bone mineralization, and supports osteocyte function and bone maturation.
Deficiency of vitamin D2 may easily lead to osteoporosis or rickets. This medication is used to treat vitamin D deficiency. Absolute vegetarians, individuals on parenteral nutrition, and patients with pancreatic insufficiency may require additional supplementation of vitamin D.
