The severity of photophobia in dry eye syndrome depends on the intensity of symptoms and the underlying causes. In patients with dry eye, photophobia typically manifests as eye discomfort or glare in bright environments, often relieved by wearing sunglasses. For these individuals, the degree of light sensitivity is generally mild. However, in more severe cases, patients may experience extreme sensitivity to light and difficulty opening their eyes, indicating a more serious form of photophobia. Dry eye-related photophobia can be caused by various factors, including insufficient tear production, abnormal tear composition, ocular diseases, or eye trauma. When photophobia results from systemic or ocular diseases, the condition may be more severe and require treatment targeting the underlying disorder. If left untreated, dry eye syndrome can lead to drying, ulceration, perforation of the ocular surface—particularly the cornea—and even blindness, significantly impairing visual function.
