Disease description:
What is a cervical Nabothian cyst?
Nabothian cysts of the cervix, also known as cervical glandular cysts, are generally classified into two types: physiological and pathological.
1. Physiological Nabothian cysts: These cysts form when, during the process of squamous epithelial replacement of the columnar epithelium in the cervical transformation zone, newly formed squamous epithelium covers the cervical glandular orifices or extends into the glands, blocking the drainage of glandular secretions and leading to accumulation and cyst formation within the glands. This type typically does not require specific treatment.
2. Pathological Nabothian cysts: These cysts usually result from local cervical injury or chronic cervicitis causing obstruction of the cervical gland ducts, which prevents secretion drainage and leads to cyst formation. Treatment may be necessary depending on the condition, and options include medication, physical therapy, or surgical intervention.
