What is a Nabothian cyst?
Disease description:
I recently went to the hospital for a check-up, and the doctor said it was a Nabothian cyst. What is a Nabothian cyst?
Nabothian cysts, also known as cervical Nabothian cysts or cervical glandular cysts, are a common gynecological condition. They primarily form when secretions from cervical glands become trapped and accumulate in the cervix, leading to cyst formation. This condition typically arises from two causes:
1. Physiological changes: In adolescent and reproductive-aged women, during the process of cervical inner epithelium extending outward, the openings of cervical glands may become blocked. This prevents normal drainage of secretions, causing them to accumulate within the tissue and form cysts. These cysts are considered a physiological change and generally do not pose any harm to health.
2. Cervicitis: When the cervix is injured, inflammation at the wound site can passively obstruct the openings of the cervical glands, resulting in cyst formation. These cysts are usually accompanied by symptoms of the underlying condition, such as increased vaginal discharge and abnormal odor.
