Can I apply essential balm (e.g., Fengyoujing) on a baby after insect bites?
When we went out to play at noon today, the baby got bitten by insects. I'm wondering if it's safe to apply essential balm (e.g., Feng You Jing) on a young infant after insect bites?

It is not recommended to apply medicated oil (e.g., Fengyou Essence) on infants after insect bites, for the following main reasons: 1) The primary ingredients of medicated oil, such as menthol and camphor, are highly irritating to an infant's delicate skin. Infants have a thin stratum corneum and underdeveloped skin barrier function, making them prone to adverse reactions such as redness, intensified itching, or even a burning sensation, which can increase discomfort. 2) Camphor is somewhat toxic. Since infants' detoxification systems are not yet fully developed, excessive absorption of camphor through the skin may affect nervous system development, leading to symptoms like irritability or excessive drowsiness. 3) The strong, pungent odor of medicated oil can irritate the mucous membranes of an infant's respiratory tract, causing coughing or sneezing, thereby disrupting normal breathing. Therefore, when infants are bitten by insects, parents should opt for mild, non-irritating products specifically designed for babies—such as calamine lotion—which effectively relieve itching while ensuring the child's health and safety.
