Can allopurinol be taken long-term?
Disease description:
I have gout and went to the hospital for medication. I found that one of the medications, called allopurinol, worked very well. I'm wondering whether long-term use of allopurinol might have any side effects. Can allopurinol be taken long-term?

Whether allopurinol can be taken long-term mainly depends on the patient's specific condition and response to the medication.
1. Indications: Allopurinol is generally suitable for long-term use to control uric acid levels, especially indicated for the treatment of gouty arthritis.
2. Contraindications: Long-term use of allopurinol is not recommended if the patient develops allergic reactions during treatment, or has pre-existing liver or kidney dysfunction, hematologic disorders, or other related conditions.
3. Adverse reactions: Long-term use of allopurinol may lead to drug dependence, kidney dysfunction, liver damage, hematologic toxicity, and skin allergic reactions.
4. Precautions: Patients taking allopurinol should drink plenty of water, abstain from alcohol and smoking, avoid high-purine foods, and undergo regular monitoring of kidney function and uric acid levels.
