What are the symptoms of Ebola hemorrhagic fever?
Disease description:
A friend has just returned from abroad and is suspected of being infected with Ebola hemorrhagic fever. What are the symptoms of Ebola hemorrhagic fever?
Ebola hemorrhagic fever is an acute, severe, and fatal viral hemorrhagic fever caused by the Ebola virus. Its symptoms are highly variable and progress rapidly. Below are the main symptoms of this disease:
1. **Acute onset**: Patients typically develop symptoms suddenly. Initial manifestations include high fever, chills, headache, muscle pain, and nausea. These symptoms often indicate a severe condition requiring immediate medical attention.
2. **Hemorrhagic manifestations**: As the disease progresses, patients may develop bleeding from multiple sites, such as hemoptysis (coughing up blood), epistaxis (nosebleeds), oral bleeding, subconjunctival hemorrhage, gastrointestinal bleeding, vaginal bleeding, skin hemorrhages, and hematuria (blood in urine). In severe cases, bleeding may peak around the tenth day of illness, and some patients may die due to severe hemorrhage.
3. **Altered mental status**: In the middle to late stages of the disease, patients may experience changes in mental status, such as delirium and somnolence, indicating that the condition has entered a critical phase.
4. **Other severe complications**: Ebola hemorrhagic fever can also lead to serious complications such as hypotensive shock, electrolyte imbalance, and acid-base disturbances, further worsening the patient's condition.
5. **High mortality rate**: The mortality rate of Ebola hemorrhagic fever is extremely high, ranging from 50% to 90%. Death due to Ebola virus infection is usually caused by myocardial infarction, hypovolemic shock, or organ failure.
