What causes chest tightness and pain?

Chest distension and pain is a common symptom that may be caused by various physiological and pathological factors. On a physiological level, hormonal changes, such as fluctuations in estrogen levels during the menstrual cycle, can lead to breast tissue edema and cause a feeling of distension and pain. Breast development during pregnancy and milk accumulation during lactation are also common causes. Pathologically, breast conditions such as mammary hyperplasia and mastitis, as well as pulmonary diseases like pleurisy and pneumothorax, and even cardiac issues such as angina pectoris, may present with chest distension and pain. Long-term poor posture, excessive physical activity, or trauma also can cause pain in the chest muscles or rib areas.
