Can I eat fava beans if I have high uric acid?
Disease description:
I often eat fava beans in my daily life. Now that my health is not so good, I've been diagnosed with high uric acid levels. I'd like to ask whether I can still eat fava beans in the future?
Patients with high uric acid levels are not advised to eat broad beans (fava beans), mainly because broad beans are considered to have a moderate purine content. The purine content of broad beans is approximately 50–100 mg per 100 grams, which may negatively affect the uric acid levels in patients' bodies. For individuals with elevated uric acid levels, excessive intake of purines can lead to increased uric acid production, which may worsen their condition and even trigger gout. Gout is an inflammatory disease caused by the deposition of uric acid salts in joints and soft tissues, manifesting as symptoms such as redness and pain in the joints. Therefore, to control uric acid levels and prevent gout attacks, patients with high uric acid should avoid or minimize consumption of moderate-purine foods like broad beans. At the same time, they should follow a low-purine diet, choosing primarily low-purine foods such as fresh vegetables, fruits, and whole grains to maintain a balanced and nutritionally complete diet. If in doubt, it is recommended to consult a healthcare professional or dietitian for advice.
