Gout patients are not advised to drink rice wine (Huangjiu). Reasons are as follows: 1. High purine content: Rice wine contains a high level of purines, with purine content reaching up to 153.3 mg per 100 grams. It is considered a high-purine food. When consumed by gout patients, it may lead to excessive purine intake, elevated uric acid levels in the body, and consequently trigger or exacerbate gout attacks. 2. Alcohol effects: The alcohol in rice wine can inhibit the liver's metabolism of uric acid, reducing its excretion and further increasing uric acid levels in the body. Additionally, alcohol may stimulate increased purine metabolism in the body, leading to higher uric acid production. 3. Other adverse effects: Rice wine may also irritate the gastrointestinal tract and joints, which is detrimental to the recovery from gout.
