I always feel breast tenderness about a week before each menstrual period. Could this be a sign of illness? I feel anxious and worry it might be breast cancer. Doctor, could you please tell me what causes breast tenderness?

Nipple pain may be caused by various factors, including but not limited to the following: nipple trauma, nipple inflammation, breast diseases, and allergic reactions. Nipple trauma can lead to skin damage and pain; nipple inflammation is usually caused by bacterial or fungal infections, presenting symptoms such as redness, swelling, pain, and discomfort; breast conditions, such as fibrocystic breast disease and mastitis, may also cause nipple pain. Additionally, certain irritants or fabrics might trigger allergic reactions on the nipple skin, resulting in pain. If symptoms persist for a prolonged period without relief or are accompanied by other symptoms, timely medical consultation is recommended. Maintaining good lifestyle habits and proper breast hygiene are also important measures for preventing and alleviating nipple pain.
